From Uber to Eric Schmidt, tech is closer to the US government than you'd think

What’s worse for a Silicon Valley executive: ties to the Chinese military or friends in the US Defense Department?

Alphabet’s executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, recently joined a Department of Defense advisory panel. Facebook recently hired a former director at the US military’s research lab, Darpa. Uber employs Barack Obama’s former campaign manager David Plouffe and Amazon.com tapped his former spokesman Jay Carney.

Quinn: After a year of slowing sales, Silicon Valley's future takes shape

Apple is the favorite child, the one who gets all the attention. And deservedly so: The iPhone maker accounted for 28 percent of the Bay Area tech industry's $833 billion in 2015 sales. Its profits were a jaw-dropping 40 percent of the region's $133 billion total.

Bots won't replace apps. Better apps will replace apps.

As a user, I want my apps — whether they’re native or web-based pseudo-apps — to have some consistent concept of identity, payments, offline storage, and data sharing. I want to be able to quickly add someone in person or from their website to my contacts. The next time I do a startup, I want to spend my time specializing in solving a specific problem for my users, not getting them over the above general hurdles.
